I am Halimah Tauheed and I am a member of the Pioneer Cohort of the SPPG. I am honoured and privileged to present myself before you as a candidate for re-election to the position of Publicity Secretary of The School of Politics, Policy, and Governance Alumni Association (SPPGAA). Serving in this role has been a deeply rewarding experience, and the support I have received from many of you today has been truly humbling. Halimah Tauheed, from Niger State, is a seasoned professional with over a decade of experience in Media, Academia, and Social Welfare. She holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Technology and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Social Informatics at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. As a Lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, she excels in teaching and mentoring, offering interactive pedagogy in the Department of Library and Information Science and contributing to the ENACTUS branch at FUTMinna. Her academic work includes published research in Information Sciences.
Beyond academia, Halimah has served as Team Lead for Media and Public Relations for TEDxMinna, an Information Officer for the Federal University of Technology – Minna Alumni Association, and an On-Air Personality at Search FM 92.3. Throughout my tenure, I have been privileged to contribute in the following ways:
1. Celebrating Milestones: I have worked to ensure that members’ birthdays and significant milestones are recognized, fostering a sense of connection and demonstrating that each alum is valued and appreciated.
2. Advocacy Posts: I created posts for various international observances, aligning with our mission to advocate for important causes and highlight issues of global significance.
3. Relief Drive: I organized a relief drive for the victims of the Türkiye earthquake, showcasing our community’s commitment to global solidarity and support.
4. Democracy Day Colloquium: I successfully organized the inaugural Democracy Day colloquium with the support of AWS Coordinators, providing a platform for critical discussions on democratic governance.
5. Engaging AWSs: I actively engaged with all AWSs to drive their programs, ensuring that their initiatives were well-coordinated and impactful.
6. Alumni Image and Newsletter: Behind the scenes, I have worked on enhancing the image of our alumni association and am in the process of creating a monthly newsletter to keep members informed and connected.
7. #EndBadGovernance Advocacy: I played a key role in organizing the social media platform for the #endbadgovernance movement, with the active support of moderators and speakers.
8. Collaborations: I am in discussions with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations for a potential collaboration to further enhance our association’s visibility and influence. I am also in discussions to ensure that #AkaraHangout is a part of events for the 2024 SPPG Graduation Week.The challenges
I would also like to formally acknowledge that there have been instances where personal matters impacted my ability to fully meet my responsibilities as a Publicity Officer, leading to some shortcomings in my performance. I deeply regret any resulting lapses and understand the importance of maintaining a high standard of commitment to our association. I am actively working to address these issues and implement strategies to ensure that personal challenges do not hinder my ability to contribute effectively in the future. As your Publicity Secretary, I am dedicated to advancing our alumni association through focused and strategic actions aimed at improving communication, boosting engagement, and enhancing our digital presence:1. Improve Communication:
o Monthly Newsletters: Deliver consistent updates and essential information to keep all members informed, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and continuity.
o Event Updates: Provide timely announcements and comprehensive follow-ups on association events to foster a well-informed and connected community.
o Member Spotlights: Highlight individual achievements and contributions to create a sense of value and appreciation among members.2. Boost Engagement:
o Interactive Content: Develop engaging polls, discussions, and features that encourage active participation and interaction within the alumni network.
o Event Organization: Coordinate and promote events that bring alumni together, facilitating meaningful interactions and strengthening our network
o Featured Member Contributions: Showcase the accomplishments and insights of our members to inspire and involve others, reflecting our commitment to mutual benefit and advancement.3. Enhance Digital Presence:
o Revamped Social Media Campaigns: Design and execute campaigns that emphasize key activities and engage members, promoting our values of visibility and inclusiveness.
o Engaging Website Content: Update and enrich our website to provide valuable resources and interactive features, supporting our mission of connectivity and educational excellence.Civic Engagement and Advocacy
1. Promotion of Civic Participation: Launch campaigns to raise awareness about civic duties such as voting and community service, motivating alumni to actively participate in societal development and embody our values of social justice and responsibility.
2. Civic Engagement Events: Facilitate and promote events that encourage alumni to engage with local and national initiatives, such as Democracy Day colloquiums, aligning with our mission to foster political and socio-economic awareness.
3. Advocacy Efforts: Identify and advocate for pressing social and political issues that align with our mission, including international observances that reflect our commitment to global impact and ethical leadership.
4. Highlighting Alumni Initiatives: Recognize the advocacy efforts and civic contributions of our members to inspire involvement and demonstrate the collective positive impact, supporting our vision of accountable and transformative leadership.Collaboration and Networking
1. Facilitate Cross-Cohort Initiatives: Organize and promote activities that unite alumni from different cohorts, such as networking events and collaborative projects, leveraging the diverse expertise within our network.
2. Building Partnerships: Forge strategic partnerships with organizations and institutions that align with our mission, including academic and professional bodies, to enhance resources, opportunities, and collaborative effort
Implementation and Accountability1. Strategic Implementation:
o Action Plans and Timelines: Develop clear action plans with specific goals, deliverables, and deadlines to ensure effective execution of initiatives, supporting our values of accountability and stewardship.
o Resource Allocation: Identify and allocate necessary resources, including budget and personnel, to ensure efficient and effective implementation of projects.
o Coordination and Oversight: Oversee the execution of initiatives with regular progress reviews, addressing challenges and making adjustments as needed to stay aligned with our mission and goals.2. Monitoring and Evaluation:
